Maybe I can simplify the issue here by asking a question:

Is it the consensus here that the following is RFC822 compliant:

defaultdomain: empty
QMAILDEFAULTDOMAIN=""

qmail-inject converts you@somewhere -> you@somewhere. (note the period)
