They certainly can. They do not always choose to do so, however. If enough people really wanted to get a determined and thorough audit of qmail done, and they included some reasonably skilled programmers, I expect that we could borrow the missing auditing expertise from the big name-brand squadron of open source code auditors, the OpenBSD team. -Bennett
