Test your checkpassword configuration directly. There are at least two
methods for doing so listed at qmail.org. Once you have checkpassword
validating a known good user account/password combination, then
integrate it into tcpserver/qmail-pop3d and continue testing.
For bonus points, you can strace/truss checkpassword while testing it
from a shell.
