mail delevery problems

Hi,

I am having a problem with checking email,
the pop3d is running and authorizeing users ok.
when it gathers a list of messages of the server it can't find any.
i am not sure if it's just the pop3 not being able to read the Maildir or
the smtp isn't delevering the messages localy, but it will deliver to a
mail server out on the web.
the permissions on the Maildir and subfiles are
drwxr-xr-x username nofiles

where could the problem lie?
