keep alive?

I am having a little trouble with qmail. Every once in a while it will
take a long time to check the mail. It seems like it only does this when
the pop3d server has been inactive for a long time. I would guess that
the pop3d server times out after inactivity, and then when I request
mail it has to start up the server before sending me my mail.
Does anyone know how I can disable/change this timeout lenght?
Or does anyone know what the problem might be otherwise?
