Are you using tcpserver to run vchkpw?  There are some tcpserver arguments
(-R -H, I think) that disable DNS lookups and TCPREMOTEINFO lookups ...

Except for heavy loads, long delays like you described are often DNS
related.

This question should be on the the vchkpw list, not qmailadmin.
