Im using Courier-IMAP as my POP3/IMAP server it accepts usernames such 
as [EMAIL PROTECTED] just fine (Ive tested with OutLook, OE and 
Mozilla/Netscape 6/7). Some older clients can't handle a username with @ 
in it so you have to do the % substitution.

The original poster is using qmail+vpopmail so he's either using QPopper 
or Courier.
