Which should be fine.

If you change the catchall account, it should update .qmail-default to list an email address instead of a Maildir. If it's an email address, the message will be forwarded, and processed as if it was sent directly to that user (i.e., .qmail is followed).

Can you verify that the .qmail-default file was changed?

And if so, that mail sent directly to the user is processed properly, but mail sent to the catchall is not?

Keep in mind that the autorespond program used by vacation will limit the number of responses it sends to any given email address in a single day.
