I added | /var/vpopmail/bin/vdelivermail '' bounce-no-mailbox
to /var/qmail/control/defaultdelivery. (don't know if this helped or is even necessary)
Then deleted the contents of /var/qmail/control/locals restarted svscan and everything began to work again.
I don't think that changing defaultdelivery like that was a good idea. You should change it back to whatever it was originally. I don't know about gentoo, but on a standard install it's set to './Maildir/'.
Look at the .qmail-default file for the domain that's causing problems, and make sure it's set to the string you listed above.
