No backup - that would have made this process too easy!!
 
No seriously, lucky this is a new install of qmail, so therefore wasnt densely populated.  Would it be too much to trouble someone for some help as to what I will need to do to rebuild it?
 
Is it possible to say just delete the vpopmail database or...?

Sounds like the MySQL server is not running. If it is, then you've
garbled the database. Hopefully you had a backup. Otherwise, it's
rebuild it from scratch.
