User 500 and group 501 is nothing
ls -l /home/vpopmail shows me the following:
drwxr-xr-x 2 501 500 4096 Sep 24 09:04 bin
drwxr-xr-x 4 501 500 4096 Sep 24 09:04 doc
drwx------ 5 501 500 4096 Oct 2 10:13 domains
drwxr-xr-x 2 501 500 4096 Sep 24 09:04 etc
drwxr-xr-x 2 501 500 4096 Sep 24 09:04 include
drwxr-xr-x 2 501 500 4096 Sep 24 09:04 lib
drwx------ 7 501 500 4096 Sep 24 07:41 Maildir
do I need to change the ownership to UID GID of the vpopmail?
vpopmail:x:7797:2109::/home/vpopmail:/bin/bash

I have user, group numbers of 89, the vpopmail user. You might have an
ownership issue. What is user 501, group 500?

Try adding domains with /home/vpopmail/bin/vadddomain
