I wouldn't use SSH as it's no the easiest way to do. Better solution
is to use some kind of VPN to tunnel traffic securely from one LAN to
another. I've got three installations of such kind. One is using
pppd-over-ssh VPN, second is using VTund-based VPN over a /dev/tapX
interface (going to replace VTund with OpenSSH as more industry
widespread solution), third is using RHEL4 native IPSec support.

Over a VPN you can use any services you want, including NFS, of
rsyncing using it's own native protocol, specifying password in a
separate 'password' file.
