I agree with Jim's assessment.
IMO, we as email administrators should do all that we can to prevent the aggravation of our customers, and prevent the waste of our bandwidth. Done properly, rejecting (bouncing), rather than deleting invalid email can help achieve both goals. At my company, we use Barracuda anti-spam gateways for domains who request spam prevention. The gateways query the qmailtoaster to see whether the address is valid during the SMTP handshake. If the email address is invalid, the conversation ends there, rejecting any further bits (envelope, attachment, etc..) which might otherwise be accepted/wasted. It is my understanding that the qmailtoaster behaves in just the same way - unless you have your catch-all action set to DELETED.
