It's a bit of a surprise to me to, but those were the facts.  Switching
to Unix Domain sockets resolved the issue, temporarily.

I've also had to add "-t 25" to spamc.conf in /etc/mail/spamassassin so
that when spamd stops doing anything for no apparent reason, as usual,
spamc will at least give up and let's the message go through before the
remote SMTP server assumes we've died, and re-delivers the message to us
countless times.
