If you are planning to run your own mail server, you should really
learn what MX records are and how DNS works.
Without working DNS you cannot receive any email with your mail server.
As Steve suggested, start reading the DNS tutorials you can find via Google.
A good book which explains how email/DNS work might be a good idea too.
