Hi Nicole,
as Jake suggested, eMPF would probably help you since it forces all uses to authenticate before sending out email. To send email, you must have a valid email on the domain and supply the correct password.  eMPF is really very easy to set up.  In your case, all you would need to do is edit your /var/qmail/control/policy file and add a line like this

mydomain.com:LREI,

Replace "mydomain.com" with your real domain.  This will allow all valid and authenticated email addresses to send and receive.  You will need to put your username @mydomain.com and password into your email client (ie. thunderbird).  Don't forget to reload/restart qmail after you edit the policy file and make sure you have a comma at the end of the line (just as in the example above).

and the mails were going out without any issues. i am wondering where i missed out the SMTP auth config wrong.
