If I change over my Apple Mail client to use SSL, I can access my qmail
accounts and all is well.
Any ideas?

Try
mechanisms = plain login digest-md5 cram-md5
in you dovecot.conf file.
FWIW,
disable_plaintext_auth = yes
is also a good idea unless your users are all local.
(I apologize that I haven't reviewed the dovecot wiki page on this yet).
