Here is the dovecot log message that I am getting that seems out of place. I configured my Mac using the Apple Mail program, and I get the same message. I am using the standard (non-ssl) IMAP ports.

If I change over my Apple Mail client to use SSL, I can access my qmail accounts and all is well.

Any ideas?

Try
 mechanisms = plain login digest-md5 cram-md5
in you dovecot.conf file.

FWIW,
disable_plaintext_auth = yes
is also a good idea unless your users are all local.

(I apologize that I haven't reviewed the dovecot wiki page on this yet).
