After more careful examination, it appears that the smarthost you're using doesn't like the sender address that ezmlm uses. "mailformed address" is in the failure message. What exactly it doesn't like is hard to say since you've obscured the message. I'm guessing that the smarthost isn't able to handle ezmlm lists (or perhaps any email lists). I would look to the smarthost for a solution. What software is the smarthost running?

The smarthost runs exim. Thanks for the tip - I'll now look at it from the other end, and see if something needs to be done with exim.
