I'm primarily a web design person who used the now infamous qmailrocks
installation, on Slackware (about 6 years ago) and I'm in some deep water
- and pretty much, over my head. I make crappy money working for a chain
of mattress warehouses and the only thing keeping me eating is my ability

getting so many external SMTP sessions that Comcast - who is fine with the
mail server - will cut us off when we start getting around 1000 external

called spamhaus.org and also changed my .qmail-default files to send mail
addressed to non-existant accounts to a local junk account. I thought
that stuff might help and it seemed to - for awhile. Not sure what
happened, but now it's creeping up again. If I tail my logs my server is
being hit every few seconds. I'd done some reading and was under the
impression that John Simpson's validrcptto patch would kill this problem.
I noticed that it's not part of this package. And now - after my life
story - my question: if I follow these directives will it put an end to
these smtp sessions from God knows where.... I would try to use John's
patch on my server but I'm not sharp enough to rebuild everything (the
smtpd-run file....and everything else) to work in conjunction with that
patch. Plain and simple, it's simply way beyond my skills.
I hate to bug the smart folks on these lists but, man, I am under the gun.
We are up around 700 or 800 SMTP sesssions a day. I'm 58, in bad health,
and I really need the ability to run a reasonably secure mail server in
order to continue eating. I didn't know what Linux was until I was 51 -
so I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
Sorry this was so long - but I've hardly slept in about 4 nights. I have
to fix this..... I want to know if the included patches will kill this
extraordinary number of SMTP sessions.

I would recommend you try out spamdyke. The stock QMT doesn't use it
yet, but there is a qtp-install-spamdyke script (part of the
qmailtoaster-plus package) that will install spamdyke for you on a QMT.
QMT is a QMR derrivative, so I expect that the qtp-install-spamdyke
script just might work for you as well on your Slackware installation.
The only tricky part might be the run file.
Unfortunately, the QTP site is down for the time being, so download just
the script isn't possible for you. If you'd like, I can send you the
script directly. Also, if you send me your run file, I'll send you one
back that will work with spamdyke should the install script not work
quite right.
