I don't think there'd be a problem with QMT at all downgrading php from
5.3 to 5.2. There are very few php components in QMT, and they're not
very new. Both 5.2 and 5.3 php versions are past the php version (5.1)
that comes with CentOS 5.5 repos.
Where are you updating PHP and MySQL packages from?

CentOS5 is at php5.1, and mysql 5.0. CentOS has been quite stable,
and is the preferred platform for QMT (although others work just
fine as well).
