Hi,
It is sensical:
If you set required_score to, say 5, in /etc/mail/spamassassin/local.cf
all mail that is 5 or above is marked as spam.
If a particular user wants to reject (or mark and passthru) anything
that is 3 or above that can be set in /var/qmail/control/simcontrol for
that
user's email account using spam_hits, right?
Wrong. A message that is between 3 and 5 is not considered spam, and is
thus not rejected. Simscan will not reject something that's not
considered spam.
I see what you're trying to accomplish, but it doesn't work that way. If
you have one user who wants to reject anything above 3 (which is just a
little low imho), then you need to set the global value required_score
to 3 as well. Personally I have required_score set to 3.7 and spam_hits
at 8.
My problem is that even when spam_hits is lower then required_score it
still shows required_score as the threshold in the header. That is
the part that does not make sense.
To you perhaps. spam_hits should not be lower than required_score. As I
explained, when it is, the values lower than the required_score are
ineffective.
So it should at least be clear what I am trying to accomplish, btw, I
had this working fine a year or so ago with a different toaster which is
no longer being maintained, with a different version of simscan, not
sure if there was a special patch though.
I haven't looked at simscan close enough to know whether there's a
config option or something that would allow this behavior. I only know
what QMT presently does. I expect that your former system was customized
in some fashion.
Thank you for looking at this,
Randy
Surely.

Thanks, Eric.
I might add that having spam_hits less than required_score seems
non-sensical to me. spam_hits tells simscan to reject *spam* over a
particular score, not all messages over a particular score. Thus,
having spam_hits less than required_score has the same effect as if
they were equal values. IOW, a message must qualify as spam (exceed
required_score) before spam_hits becomes effective.
In order to reject spam for a given user at a score that's below
tagged spam for all others (required_score), you'd need to be able to
specify a different required_score for that user. I don't know that
this is presently possible.
Once more, I'm interested to know what it is you're try to accomplish.
Can you elaborate?
FWIW, simscan will no longer be used in QMTv2 (amavis will replace
it), so I wouldn't be too concerned with simscan at this point. I
would like to ensure though that whatever it is you're trying to
accomplish can be done with the amavis configuration in QMTv2.
