That being said, I'm guessing that your client doesn't have TLS or
secure logins enabled with port 143. Since you have
"disable_plaintext_auth = yes", dovecot will not allow logins with

port 143, clients need either secure logins (cram-md5) or TLS enabled.
TLS is preferred, as it will encrypt the entire connection. Note, that
TLS on port 143 is also preferred over IMAP/SSL on port 993.

Can you write up on the wiki how to upgrade Dovecot to the newer
version for
us newbies? Again, I followed the instructions on the wiki page
(non-rpm)
for the install.
Also, what are the advantages of upgrading to the newer version?

Yes, documentation is forthcoming. The lack of documentation is why I
haven't made a formal announcement of it here yet. It's in the repo
though, and I expect there will be no more tweaks to it, only version
upgrades from upstream.
See the dovecot wiki(s) for a change histories. You can also find
upgrade instructions there to guide you.

I think I have run into a Dovecot issue. I have posted on the Dovecot
mailing list, but thought I'd ask here as well. I am attempting to copy
email from our old email server (ModusMail closed source) to our QMT
server. I am doing this using Thunderbird. Whenever it tries to copy a
message that has been forwarded, it errors out complaining that Dovecot
does not know how to handle to 'forward flag'. I am attempting to look
via Google at any dovecot forward flag issues, but also wondered if the
new version of dovecot would fix this issue. Any luck on the
documentation for converting from the old 1.2.3 version to the newer
version?

Let's see what they say on the dovecot list. If upgrading will fix the
problem, I'll see about getting the documentation a higher priority.
