Hello,
I have been using google as a backup for slightly over a year and it works
perfect. Googles spam filtering is amazing so spammers who normally target
secondary mx's are sorted out. In my set up, I have about 8500 email boxes
on my primary system. But you don't have to set up all 8500 email boxes
on google. I just set up one with catch-all as the wiki suggested and
deployed fetch mail on primary system. Fetch mail is able to sort and
deliver mail to the respective email boxes... I have very happy with this
setup myself.

Thanks

Alex
