Should I backup first then update to Dovecot.

I'd be sure to have a backup of /home/vpopmail/domains/, just in case.
The wiki has a page for upgrading to dovecot. It's pretty simple to do.
Let us know if you have any other questions or run into a problem. Note, if you have pop users who leave emails on the server, you may need to do something special if you use dovecot for pop. IIRC, there's a file on the server which keeps track of which messages have been downloaded, and that file probably isn't the same between qmail-pop3d and dovecot.
