We know the username is correct but the iPhone seems to prefix
the username to the mail server address. Yet if we remove the
server address from the username then we get the same error

The username field should be [email protected]
What is the authentication type which iPhone is trying to use? It should
work with plain, login, or digest-md5. If the phone tries with cram-md5,
it will not work with the default QMT dovecot settings. Note, we plan to
deprecate cram-md5, as it's not not secure in some ways (ironically). If
you must use cram-md5, you can add it to the dovecot authentication
types for the time being. I don't recommend doing so though.
