Apologies, the solution seems to as simple as to remove the host portion
from the FQDN specified in /var/qmail/control/me file

forwarding

Eric,

I can't as yet get the root (admin-type) mail forwarded. (Though only on a
single machine to my vpopmail account)

Reviewing queue messages, I saw:

Hi. This is the qmail-send program at ns.server.com.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following
addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

        <[email protected]>:
        mail is looping

which is why I queried the differences in the addresses I noticed, pondering
whether it is related.

Had mail problems which was resolved the moment I removed all aliases.
