You can avoid the timeout error message "Your IMAP server has closed the
connection. This may occur if you have left the connection idle for too
long" by changing the setting. The default install of Outlook 2003
provides the following configuration.

To adjust the Server timeouts setting:

 1. From the Tools menu, select E-mail Accounts...
 2. Select View or change existing e-mail accounts and click Next.
 3. Select the e-mail you want to modify and click Change.
 4. To bring up the Internet E-Mail Settings window, click More Settings...
 5. Select the Advanced tab.
 6. Left click on the slide-point and drag to the far right side (10
minutes). By changing the setting, you can avoid the above error
    message.
 7. Click Apply and then OK.

This should be done on all Outlook clients imo.

Also, I found this on the dovecot list (although it's talking about v1.1):

You could also try it yourself:

telnet imap.server.com 143
a login user pass
b idle

and see if it gets disconnected. It should also send "* OK Still here"
every 2 minutes, so I'd guess nothing should disconnect it..

Based on the 2 minutes stated here, I suspect that changing Outlook's timeout value may fix the problem.

Thanks Finn.
