I think this is on the right track. When I do this, dovecot tells me to put an 'a' before the command, so the command is:
a login user pass
which gets me logged in (substituting user and pass).

Note, I'm running the latest dovecot .qt. package
(dovecot-2.2.7-0.qt.el6.i686), but I wouldn't expect that to really matter.

You say this just started happening out of the blue and nothing changed?

# df -h
# free
# uptime
# ps -eF | grep dovecot | sort
