Hi Fabian,
  Turns out it was something like that.
The DNS for the remote mail server was utterly
screwed up. After 40 minutes of testing here to
assure my client it was not my mail server, the DNS
entries for the remote magically fixed them selves
and the clients email left the queue nicely.
