The table is still in early development. The API has not settled and I'm shure there are a lot of convenience methods missing. Everyone who uses the table should keep this mind.
You're right: The user should not be bothered with internal details. The header is one of these details. I think this special problem is just the result of a misunderstanding: The header is NOT the one who defines the look of header. This is done by the HeaderCellRenderer. The header just manages the raw header cells and mouse events. It is just not yet implemented that the header asks its renderers how high they are. Thus - when the table gets stable - no one will have to deal directly with the header any more.
