No, the editing field being transparent is definitely not as expected. It didn't used to be. Something changes in the last bunch of weeks' work (on appearances, I expect) that broke it. The default editor should completely cover the cell. The contents of the cell (other than what gets copied into the cell editor) should be completely hidden by the editor.
