My impression is that your application seems to be relativly complex.
And you did a migration from 0.7.x to 0.8.x.
It would be very helpfull if you could give us a time cost estimation
for the migration process.

And you are correct, no need to patch the files anymore. I also updated the
prototype.js file from version 1.6.0.2 to the latest version 1.6.0.3 (not a
big step ...) and it also works.
One of the problems with ProtoChart is, that there is practically no
(visible) action/development on it since its initial upload in July 2008. A
question on the mailing list in regard to this was answered onn February 6,
2009:
The project is alive, we just had a lot going on at Deensoft, so
couldn't provide regular updates.
So, I guess, it is just not clear what's going on there. But it could still
be a good starting point for further development, if somebody has the time
to do that.

As I said:
perl -i -p -e 's/\$/__Dollar/g' ProtoChart.js prototype.js
did the job for us. Works in 0.7.x and 0.8.x
