but what if firewall is configured to give no answer to ping ? Could you give us more precisions on the context, why you want to do that ?
If it is your network, make sure servers all open port 80 for eg and HTTP GET is your friend :-) Beware that will only ensure web server is running. Your web server may be down or crashed while your server is running perfectly fine.
