(a) Sorry, I am getting old, forgot to mention platform (and just 
reconfirmed both):

      Chrome or Safari 4, win vista-64

(b) I just realized there is no need to click in the list box. Just go 
from typing to the drag-select, right-to-left, of the whole field and 
start typing, the listener will not get called.

(c) To be clear, the field /does/ edit OK! But the listeners (I tried 
having all three keyup/down/press firing) stop firing (so when the user 
hits Enter the application misses that they did so (it should start 
searching)

Hmmm. Maybe a combination of watching for the input event and Enter keys 
will work as a stopgap.
