Looking at the css shadows in 1.4 (shadow-window-css) I see that
you are using a solid shadow color of #999999, with bright
backgrounds this is fine, but when the shadow is 'on' a dark
background, this has the odd effect of the shadow being brighter
than the background.

how about using a black shadow with alpha transparency:
rgba(0,0,0,128) or similar ?
