As the author of the dialog contrib, I wholeheartedly support this request. My contrib is really poor quality, it was hacked together quickly out of necessity for want of "real" dialog widget set in the core. It is time for a well-designed, themeable, extensible, well-maintained etc. set of widgets. I am more than happy to move the contrib into the attic.
