As Thomas suggested for a workaround, please use qooxdoo 1.3 when working through the tutorials. Their current code base unfortunately doesn't reflect the latest framework release. I created a bug report http://bugzilla.qooxdoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5557 , you might be interested in registering for bugzilla and put yourself on CC. HTH.
