I Agree with Eric - I think the simplest at this point is to create a
branch for M1, RC with ant and move on. I +1 for that.
Then we re-open the java mainline for maven and everything else for a M2.

I worked on Sunday to get the initial mvn branch in. I then worked
again last night to do the distribution stuff, which was a separate
request.
Then there clearly has been another communication breakdown
since that was not my expectation or that of at least some others.
