It's probably one of these: - improper installation of autoconf or automake - autom4te directory created by some other version of tools You're not the first to get that diagnostic: http://sources.redhat.com/ml/bug-automake/2004/msg00183.html First try removing autom4te/. If that doesn't work, see if you have the right tools early in your path.
