The situation is this: I am trying to send mail
from my hotmail account to an email account/server (qpopper) that exists on
one of my machines. I can configure my outlook express to connect to the qpopper
POP server but there is never any mail to download. Furthermore, the mail that I
attempt to send is never bounced back to my hotmail account as undeliverable.
Where is the mail going? Sendmail SMTP service is also running on this machine
but port 25 is not accessible to the internet.
Perhaps my understanding of mail delivery is
lacking. Here's my understanding of how things work:
1) when sending a message, an SMTP server
connects to the recipient POP server and the message is transferred
2) when retrieving the message, a connection to the
POP server is made using a mail client (eg outlook express)
Is this not the way things work? Are you suggesting
that there is an intermediate storage place/service, other than the POP server,
that manages messages and that the POP server merely pulls messages from
this service?
