Sendmail SMTP service is also running on this machine but port 25 is not accessible to the internet.    First what is the address you're sending mail to?  Second, if you're running a firewall, you have to open up port 25 (SMTP) service...   Is this not the way things work? Are you suggesting that there is an intermediate storage place/service, other than the POP server, that manages messages and that the POP server merely pulls messages from this service?    Precisely...  =^^=
