Strace shows the processes waiting in a "read(0, " call; I have never been able to get more information out of it. I have even set up a debug-enabled qpopper with strace on a special port number, but when I told one of our users to actually use that special port, such hangs never occured again on that special port, so I never got a detailed log of what happens.
