Well, if the connection aborts or timesout, the server
doesn't know what the user has actually SEEN, so it's
very risky to "auto-delete" mail in that case.

How happy would your users be if this were the case:
  I told outbreak to check the mail, it started and the windows
  box crashed.  When I checked next, all my mail was gone;
  I never even saw it.  I need you to get it back.

That's the wrong way, qpopper is doing the correct thing.
