I think server mode is potentially risky if the spool is modified by local processes other than popper or the local delivery agent during a pop session. Even if the locking mechanisms are compatible, since Qpopper unlocks the spool during the session anyway. The key is that the spool has to be modified during the pop session, which is your #2 point.
