Again, it depends what is on the other side of the TCP port. You mention amavis, but that's not an SMTP daemon, so something else is involved as well.Amavis does listen on port 10024 - heres a snippet from lsof

you can feed info into amavis via a socket - amavis DOES have basic smtp protocol support.
Unlikely. You might be confused about messages which have been deferred. They're not on your system, but out there on the net, waiting for their sending MTA to try again.
I do wish this was documented better. Not being able to say - "messages recieved but not to location x are here'
Also how long does qpsmtpd queue.. Is that dictated by whats in /var/qmail/control/queuelifetime??
