Showing a full tree with x levels depth seemed to be too much for the left 
pane. You'd typically have to scroll a lot, or give the pane so much space that 
your editor space is suffering. 

Anyhow, I personally wouldn't mind if you or somebody else would provide a 
patch that shows a full tree there (maybe as an option). I hardly use the 
filesystem view myself, pressing 'Ctrl+k f'  to open the quick toolbar is much 
more convenient :)
