You can do that but it means using qmake which is rather unforgiving and cludgy. It's nice to have confidence in your tools. Plus it mean every student would need the Qt sdk. You'd much rather spend your time productively than trying to figure what qmake is not linking your libraries because you got the order of the variables wrong.
Again, I would really recommend CMake. A project is just a single text file which you can process with a GUI tool to generate the make files for your platform.
