Speaking as a student myself, in my opinion if it's an introduction to C++ class (or especially a first-level programming class in general), then doing Makefiles by hand is probably too complicated (even though it is a good skill to have), but the assignments would probably not be complex enough to make QMake an issue. Heck, for the sort of projects we did in my first-year C++ class, they could have used CMake without much issue.
