Maven has a special move generator for these situations. It specifically looks for places where the opponent can make big scores, and generates plays that maximize the difference in scores, taking blocking into consideration. While sufficiently fast computers would be able to dispense with such complications by virtue of looking at enough moves, IMO it is necessary to include such a generator for the foreseeable future.
