My experience has been pretty good with running linux on old hardware;
also there are distrbutions specifically catering for older low-end
kit.

As for learning the O/S, I was suggesting booting straight into
Quackle, they should never have to see the O/S.

My feeling too.  In fact just an hour ago I ordered a 3.5GHz desktop
for $200 for a very similar reason.  (It was a refurb, and 'only'
512Mb ram, which is about 500Mb more than I need anyway :-) )
